KuCoin Review: Big Altcoin Menu, Cheap Spot Fees and an Enforcement Record You Must Weigh
KuCoin lists far more small-cap coins than most rivals and charges 0.1% spot fees. We set that against a $297 million US guilty plea, a permanent US bar, a Canadian penalty and an Austrian onboarding freeze.

The verdict
KuCoin is useful if you want small-cap coins that bigger exchanges will not list, and its base spot fee of 0.1% is low. It is a weak choice for anyone who values clean regulatory standing. The operator pleaded guilty in the US in 2025, was permanently barred from US users in 2026, and has been penalised in Canada. Keep balances small, withdraw often, and treat it as a trading venue, not storage.
Best for Experienced traders hunting small-cap coins, with small balances
Pros
- Base spot fee of 0.1%, with discounts for larger volume and for holding KCS
- Lists many small-cap and new coins that larger exchanges skip
- Publishes a proof of reserves page with reserve ratios above 100%
- Offers spot, margin, futures and a full range of earn products in one account
Cons
- Operator pleaded guilty in January 2025 to running an unlicensed money transmitter
- Permanently barred from US users after a March 2026 CFTC consent order
- FINTRAC fined the operator about C$19.6 million in 2025 for AML failures
- Austria's FMA froze new customer onboarding at KuCoin EU in early 2026
Do not open a KuCoin account because of its coin list alone. The list is long, and that is the draw: a trader looking for a small token that Binance or Coinbase will not touch often finds it here first. But the company behind it has pleaded guilty to a US federal crime, and the regulatory record since then has not been clean. We think the risk is manageable only for experienced users who keep little on the platform.
The enforcement record, in order
In January 2025 KuCoin's operator pleaded guilty in the United States to running an unlicensed money transmitting business and agreed to pay about $297 million in fines and forfeiture, according to BleepingComputer's report of the Justice Department announcement. The charges centred on weak anti-money-laundering and know-your-customer controls. The two founders agreed to step back from the business.
On 31 March 2026, CoinDesk reported a CFTC consent order with a $500,000 civil penalty that turned the temporary US exit into a permanent one. If you are in the US, KuCoin is closed to you, and you should be sceptical of any workaround.
In Canada, FINTRAC announced a penalty of about C$19.6 million on the operator in 2025 for failing to register and for compliance failures, per its public notice. Ontario banned the exchange from its capital markets in 2022.
Europe: licensed, then frozen
KuCoin's EU arm won a MiCA licence in Austria, which on paper allows service in the EEA. Then, in February 2026, the Austrian regulator barred KuCoin EU from taking on new customers because required compliance roles, including a money-laundering officer and a sanctions officer, were empty. The ban lasts until those posts are filled, and KuCoin said it expected that soon. We could not confirm whether it has lifted. Check before you try to register.
What you get for taking the risk
The sales case rests on three things. The base spot fee is 0.10% for makers and takers, which is well under the retail rates at several regulated exchanges we have reviewed. There is a VIP programme that rewards volume and holding the KCS token.

Second, breadth. KuCoin's markets page lists a very large number of tokens, many with thin books. That is a feature if you want early access and a hazard if you want to exit. Small-cap spreads can swallow a cheap fee in one trade, and tokens listed early are often the ones that fail.

Third, product range: spot, margin, futures and earn products sit under one login. Derivatives and leverage add their own ways to lose money, and we do not suggest them to beginners.
How we judge the safety claims
KuCoin publishes a proof of reserves page that describes third-party audits and lets users verify their own balances. Reserve ratios on the page sit above 100% for the assets shown. That is better than no disclosure, but reserves for named assets do not show liabilities such as margin loans, and a snapshot is not an ongoing guarantee. KuCoin also suffered a large hack in 2020 and recovered most of the funds, which tells you it can survive an incident but also that it has had one.

A practical routine if you still go ahead
Treat the account as a workbench. Fund it with what you intend to trade this week, turn on every security setting, and use an allowlist for withdrawal addresses. Before you buy a small token, look at the order book depth for a sell of the same size you plan to buy, and check whether the token has a second venue to exit through. Keep screenshots or exports of your trade history, because a platform under regulatory pressure can change terms, restrict a region or pause onboarding with little notice. Your local tax rules still apply to every trade, whatever the platform reports.
Who should use it, and how
KuCoin suits an experienced trader outside the US who specifically needs a token that others do not list, who will withdraw to a personal wallet after each trade and who has read the local rules. It does not suit a first-time buyer, anyone who cares most about regulatory standing, or anyone planning to leave funds on the exchange for months. Nothing here is a recommendation to buy any coin.
Verdict
Cheap fees and an unmatched altcoin menu are real strengths. A guilty plea, a permanent US bar, a Canadian penalty and an Austrian onboarding freeze are real weaknesses, and the last of these is recent. We rate it below the middle of our scale for that reason.
